Energy and green\u00adhouse gas emis\u00adsions are the key drivers of our envi\u00adron\u00admental foot\u00adprint. Since reopening in 2008, we have pursued a clear goal: to consis\u00adtently reduce energy consumption and green\u00adhouse gas emis\u00adsions \u2013 without compro\u00admising on quality and hospi\u00adtality. Today, over four-fifths of our energy comes from renewable sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Unless otherwise stated, all envi\u00adron\u00admental indi\u00adcators in this chapter \u2013 including energy, green\u00adhouse gas emis\u00adsions, water and waste \u2013 refer to The Dolder Grand (Kurhausstrasse 65, Zurich).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\n \n\t \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\n\n\"\"\n\t\t\t<\/picture>\n\t <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Our energy supply is under\u00adpinned by a combi\u00adnation of renewable sources and energy-effi\u00adcient building tech\u00adnology, which we have been system\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcally devel\u00adoping since 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

We meet just under two-thirds of our energy needs with elec\u00adtricity generated from European hydropower \u2013 and, since our reopening in 2008, 100% of this has come from renewable sources. Despite steadily rising visitor numbers, our elec\u00adtricity consumption has fallen by around 10% compared with the year we reopened in 2008. Since 2024, a photo\u00advoltaic system comprising 488 panels on the roofs of our modern wing and the Dolderbahn mountain station has supple\u00admented our energy mix. The roof surfaces are covered with an extensive wild\u00adflower and sedum green roof, whose evap\u00ado\u00adrative cooling further increases the panels\u2019 effi\u00adciency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Around one-sixth of the energy is supplied by our geot\u00adhermal system: 70 geot\u00adhermal probes at a depth of 152 metres provide the Dolder Grand with heating and cooling. In combi\u00adnation with a heat pump, the domestic hot water is preheated from around 8 \u00b0C to 45 \u00b0C. Supporting energy from the gas boiler is used only to achieve the required high temper\u00adature of 65 \u00b0C. This ground storage tech\u00adnology has made it possible to halve the building\u2019s overall energy consumption despite the floor area doubling as a result of the 2004\u20132008 reno\u00advation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\n \n\t \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\n\n\"\"\n\t\t\t<\/picture>\n\t <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Natural gas<\/strong> is used primarily for peak-load heat gener\u00adation and to provide high temper\u00ada\u00adtures. Consumption has fallen by around 36% compared to 2008 but remains by far the largest direct driver of emis\u00adsions. The mix is supple\u00admented by small quan\u00adtities of bioethanol, wood and charcoal for the catering facil\u00adities, as well as propane and butane for the kitchens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

At the Dolder Grand, a modern building management system ensures that energy is used exactly where it is needed. Energy consumption is contin\u00adu\u00adously opti\u00admised through the intel\u00adligent coor\u00addi\u00adnation of systems, oper\u00adating times and indoor climate. The venti\u00adlation systems feature heat recovery: the energy contained in the exhaust air is used to preheat or pre-cool the supply air. This commitment has been recog\u00adnised with the effi\u00adciency label from the Energy Agency for Industry (EnAW), of which Dolder Hotel AG has been a member since 2005 as part of a measure-oriented target agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

We also focus on resource-saving initia\u00adtives when it comes to the guest expe\u00adrience: our Linen & Towel Policy stip\u00adu\u00adlates that bed linen is changed only every three days as standard, and towels only on request. This policy reduces washing cycles, energy consumption, water usage and the use of deter\u00adgents. In addition, guests can actively opt out of the daily room cleaning service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

When it comes to our vehicle fleet, we are increas\u00adingly tran\u00adsi\u00adtioning to electric and hybrid power\u00adtrains: four of our six limou\u00adsines are already hybrid or electric vehicles. Our guest vehicles (compli\u00admentary cars) comprise one fully electric vehicle in summer, and one electric and one hybrid vehicle in winter. To help guests travel with lower emis\u00adsions, we provide a charging infra\u00adstructure in the car park with load management, as well as addi\u00adtional charging points at the Main Building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Through the myclimate programme Cause We Care<\/a> (since 2020), guests can make a voluntary climate contri\u00adbution; the hotel matches the amount and invests half of the guest\u2019s contri\u00adbution in the climate protection project \u2018Back to the Green Island in Mada\u00adgascar with energy-effi\u00adcient cookers\u2019, and the remainder in local energy effi\u00adciency and green\u00adhouse gas reduction measures. Since 2020, the contri\u00adbu\u00adtions to the project in Mada\u00adgascar have reduced around 11,400 tonnes of CO\u2082e, supple\u00admented by a further 3,400 tonnes from addi\u00adtional climate protection invest\u00adments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\t\t\n\t<\/video>\n\n\t<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Our seminar packages are vege\u00adtarian as standard. Meat or fish options can be booked for an addi\u00adtional charge, of which CHF 2.00 per person is donated to Cause We Care as a climate contri\u00adbution. In the staff restaurant Green, the menu is fully vegan every Wednesday \u2013 an initiative (Vegan Wednesday, since 2021) that orig\u00adi\u00adnated from staff sugges\u00adtions and was imple\u00admented by the D-Impact team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n \n

Since 2008, we have been system\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcally recording and analysing our green\u00adhouse gas emis\u00adsions to document progress and derive targeted reduction measures. Since 2021, accounting has been carried out in part\u00adnership with myclimate and covers not only energy-related emis\u00adsions but also other oper\u00ada\u00adtional activ\u00adities along the value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Accounting is carried out in accor\u00addance with the inter\u00adna\u00adtionally recog\u00adnised green\u00adhouse gas accounting standard \u2013 the GHG Protocol (Green\u00adhouse Gas Protocol, WRI, 2004) \u2013 and covers all emis\u00adsions under the company\u2019s oper\u00ada\u00adtional control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

In the 2025 reporting year, Dolder Hotel AG\u2019s total emis\u00adsions amounted to 4,047.51 tonnes of CO\u2082e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\n \n\t \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\n\n\"\"\n\t\t\t<\/picture>\n\t <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Green\u00adhouse gas emis\u00adsions by scopes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Emis\u00adsions are cate\u00adgorised into three scopes in accor\u00addance with the GHG Protocol:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\n \n\t \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\n\n\"\"\n\t\t\t<\/picture>\n\t <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Scope 1<\/strong> (direct emis\u00adsions from the company\u2019s own oper\u00ada\u00adtional facil\u00adities and own vehicles): 383 t CO\u2082e (9.5%) \u2013 mainly from natural gas used for heat gener\u00adation and the vehicle fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Scope 2<\/strong> (indirect emis\u00adsions from purchased energy: elec\u00adtricity, steam, heating and cooling for own use): 1.4 t CO\u2082e (< 0.1%) \u2013 virtually zero due to the procurement of 100% renewable elec\u00adtricity (market-based).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Scope 3<\/strong> (indirect emis\u00adsions in the value chain): 3,663 t CO\u2082e (90.5%) \u2013 by far the largest share. The accounting covers all key cate\u00adgories of the GHG Protocol, including the procurement of goods and services, upstream energy gener\u00adation, employees\u2019 commutes, external laundry services, business travel, transport and distri\u00adb\u00adution, capital goods and oper\u00ada\u00adtional waste. The largest single item is catering: food and beverages alone account for 56% of total emis\u00adsions, at 2,258 t CO\u2082e. Other signif\u00adicant contrib\u00adutors are employee commuting (474 t CO\u2082e, 12%), upstream heating and cooling (479 t CO\u2082e, 12%), external laundry services (243 t CO\u2082e, 6%), business travel (162 t CO\u2082e, 4%) and waste and recy\u00adcling (47 t CO\u2082e, 1%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The following initia\u00adtives are being imple\u00admented or are planned to achieve the set targets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Decar\u00adbon\u00adi\u00adsation of the heat supply.<\/strong> Natural gas is by far the largest direct driver of emis\u00adsions and accounts for the vast majority of our Scope 1 and 2 emis\u00adsions. The effi\u00adciency and opti\u00admi\u00adsation measures currently being imple\u00admented are leading to a moderate reduction in CO\u2082 emis\u00adsions in the low single-digit percentage range. As the majority of emis\u00adsions are attrib\u00adutable to the use of natural gas, the overall effect remains limited. A signif\u00adicant reduction also requires struc\u00adtural adjust\u00adments to heat gener\u00adation. In the short to medium term, the focus is on reducing consumption through oper\u00ada\u00adtional effi\u00adciency improve\u00adments and plant opti\u00admi\u00adsation. At the same time, we are eval\u00adu\u00adating options for struc\u00adtural adjust\u00adments to heat gener\u00adation with a view to replacing fossil fuels in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

In the short term, addi\u00adtional measures such as the planned heat recovery from the grease traps of our kitchens will contribute to further effi\u00adciency gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Building services and oper\u00ada\u00adtions management.<\/strong> Energy flows are system\u00adat\u00adi\u00adcally analysed via the central building management system to contin\u00adu\u00adously identify and realise effi\u00adciency potential. Specif\u00adi\u00adcally, this includes the ongoing upgrade of room controls with energy-saving mode, the hydraulic balancing of the heating system, the continued conversion to LED lighting \u2013 which was extended to further building areas during the reporting year \u2013 as well as the opti\u00admi\u00adsation of venti\u00adlation and hot water production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Elec\u00adtri\u00adfi\u00adcation of the vehicle fleet.<\/strong> In the 2025 reporting year, the guest fleet was converted from BMW 7 Series diesel models to BMW 7 Series hybrid vehicles. This enabled a further reduction in direct CO\u2082 emis\u00adsions from guest transport and business travel. The gradual elec\u00adtri\u00adfi\u00adcation will continue, with the aim of further reducing the remaining fossil fuel share in saloons and company vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Scope 3 reduction.<\/strong> The greatest reduction potential lies in catering and beverages (56% of total emis\u00adsions) and staff commuting (12%). A separate mobility survey (2025) high\u00adlights where this potential lies: although 55% of the work\u00adforce uses public transport, 66% of commuting emis\u00adsions are attrib\u00adutable to the 38% who drive to work. The average commuting distance per full-time equiv\u00adalent is 38.3 km, which is above the Swiss average of 27.4 km. On this basis, incen\u00adtives for sustainable mobility are currently being reviewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Emis\u00adsions credits and climate protection invest\u00adments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
